Crowds of people surrounded Jesus as he taught and ministered, but on the night of the Passover meal, he gathered just the twelve disciples to join him in a last meal. Jesus blessed bread and wine, giving the disciples tangible proof of God’s new covenant, open to all who would open their hearts to Christ.
In 1936, a handful of Presbyterian Church (USA) ministers gathered to discuss and pray about their concerns for a planet headed toward a second world war. Divisions within the church of Jesus Christ dulled any call for harmony among the world’s nations.
As these ministers talked and prayed, they realized the power of the Lord’s Supper was a way to unite all Christians everywhere. In taking the bread and cup, Christians of all nations, all ethnic groups, all economic stations, all languages, subscribing to all interpretations of Scripture, of all denominations, and of all political affiliations, declare Christ the Lord of life and become the body of Christ living in the world. All divisions melt as brother and sister eat and drink the body and blood of Christ.
That handful of Presbyterian ministers organized the first World Communion Sunday as a time for Christians everywhere to proclaim their unity in Christ at his table. And, as the founders had intended, the idea soon spread far beyond the Presbyterian Church.
