Presbyterian Urban Ministries (PUM) began in 1968 as an outreach of the Presbytery of San Diego. Operating from a residential location in the Golden Hills neighborhood of San Diego, PUM stands apart from other inner-city social agencies: it isn't a homeless shelter, a soup kitchen, or a thrift store.
PUM dedicates its efforts to giving a hand up, rather than a hand out, to those in crisis. PUM offers respectful and supportive assistance, addressing physical, psychological, social, and Christ-centered spiritual needs of San Diegans without skill or resources to meet them independently. Recipients of PUM services must evidence some level of personal emergency to qualify for assistance, which is offered without regard to personal conviction of faith and without imposing Presbyterian convictions upon recipients.
PUM employs a minimal staff of four and relies heavily upon a devoted corps of 50 volunteers who help to organize food and fund raising drives, stock a canned food cache, assemble emergency bags of food, and maintain a small warehouse of lightly-used clothing.
Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church Board of Deacons and Missions Committee support PUM through donations of cash, goods, and volunteers. Below is a schedule of PUM events in which our church has participated.
