Decisions, decisions. Another necktie that Uncle Ned probably won't wear, or a year's worth of inoculations to protect an Ethiopian orphan against deadly diseases? How does the Spirit speak to you?
". . . whoever is kind to the needy honors God."
Proverbs 14:31 (NIV)
In 1995, seeking to honor God, the Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church Missions Committee sponsored the first of what would become an annual tradition of Alternative Christmas Markets.
One Sunday in December, in a festive farmers' market atmosphere on the church campus, merchants representing a variety of church ministries and missions offer comfortably priced Christmas gift alternatives. In exchange for purchases—actually, tax-deductible charitable donations—mission merchants give shoppers a memento as a record of each purchase. Shoppers then offer the mementoes as token Christmas gifts to acquaintances, friends, relatives and loved ones.
What a bargain! One gift helps four receive the true Spirit of Christmas: a Christian mission, the recipient of Christian outreach, the recipient of the donation token, and the gift shopper.
