Ash Wednesday Worship Service
Wednesday, February 17
Easter is the most important annual religious feast in the Christian liturgical year.
Traditionally Easter season is a forty-six day period symbolic of the forty days Jesus wandered in the wilderness. Easter season begins on Ash Wednesday, named for the practice of mixing oil with the ashes of the previous year’s palm branches used on Palm Sunday, to be applied in the shape of a cross to the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. Ash Wednesday worship service includes music, pastoral homily (sermon), and Holy Communion.
Ash Wednesday is a moveable feast, occurring as early as February 4 or as late as March 10 because it is dependent upon the date of Easter, also a moveable feast, that falls between March 22 and April 25. Ash Wednesday marks the official start of Lent, a season of prayer, penance, and fasting—typically of a particiular food or activity—as a reminder of Jesus' sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church Awana Sparks Win San Diego Competition
Saturday, February 13
Rebecca Smith, Director of Children's Ministries, shared a victorious moment with Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church Sparks clubbers, kindergarten through second grade this past Saturday, at AwanaGames, an annual sports event that draws competition from Awana clubs throughout San Diego County. This is the first time that the Coronado Community Awana Club has participated. Each teammate received a commemorative patch and our director received a handsome wall plaque. All events in the Sparks-A-Rama division of the competition are agility focused: Sparky Balloon Pop, Sparky Bean Bag In-and-Out, Sparky Bowl, Sparky Crawl, Sparky Safari, and Sparky Train. Our ten winners trained for one hour every Saturday in January to prepare for the competition. Congratulations coaches and team!

February Is Thrift Cottage Appreciation Month
Monday, February 1
If you’ve read the recently published 2009 church annual report, you know that our tiny Thrift Cottage once again has turned our used clothing and household goods into $57,000 in cash. After operating expenses, we disbursed nearly $35,000 to our favorite ministries and missions last year.
As the Thrift Cottage enters its twenty-seventh year on our campus, please show your appreciation for Jean Watson and a small but dedicated group of volunteers who man the cottage five days a week. Volunteer for an hour or two. Visit the cottage and look through the racks and shelves to become familiar with the quality merchandise that awaits bargain shoppers. When you spring clean, please remember that your donations of used quality clothing, household items, toys, and books will work to advance God’s kingdom in 2010.

Annual Presbyterian Apportionment—Per Capita—Offering Reminder
Monday, February 1
Per capita funding is how Presbyterians share the costs of coming together to discern how the Spirit leads the future and how Presbyterian churches train members to become better elders and ministers.
Per capita is a fundamental way in which all of the nearly 11,000 congregations and governing bodies of the Presbyterian Church (USA) connect and participate in the work of the wider church. As affirmed by the ordination vows taken by elders and ministers of the Word and Sacrament, per capita could be called the Presbyterian Covenant Community Fund.
Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church per capita (per person) apportionment for year 2010 is $30. The annual church budget includes a per capita line item, but our communicant members customarily offer their own per capita payments. Our Session voted to designate our per capita for Presbytery of San Diego use, but any church member who prefers that his tax go to the Presbyterian General Assembly or Synod may request so.
Each package of Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church family pledge envelopes includes two uniquely printed envelopes:
• one printed for a per capita offering
• one printed for an offering to cover the cost of printing and packaging the envelopes
