Sunday, February 7
This annual must-experience event provides unique sights, sounds, and tastes that instill appreciation for Scottish culture that has contributed so much to our Presbyterian history.
The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) sets aside Presbyterian Heritage Sunday as an annual day to celebrate, reflect upon, and learn more about the long and rich history of the Presbyterian movement in America. It falls on the Sunday closest to May 21, the date of the opening of the first General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America in 1789.
Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church, however, celebrates the anniversary on the first Sunday in February. The pastor wears his own family clan kilt to the morning worship services. Other Scottish members of the congregation also dress in clan kilts and open the worship service by playing bagpipes while marching into the sanctuary and then performing Scottish hymns during the service.
At the close of worship, the pastor invites the courageous among the congregation to taste traditional Scottish haggis during Coffee Connection. If haggis doesn't tempt you, the homemade shortbread will!

Near the beginning of each year, the Presbytery of San Diego offers training to all member churches. Event participants attend two plenary sessions, two workshops, and on-site lunch. The pace is brisk, the information is relevant, and opportunities to connect with local ministries and gain from the perspectives of other Presbyterians outside one's own congregation are invaluable. Well worth the nominal fee and weekend hours.

Wednesday, February 17
Easter is the most important annual religious feast in the Christian liturgical year. Traditionally Easter season is a forty-six day period symbolic of the forty days Jesus wandered in the wilderness. Easter season begins on Ash Wednesday, named for the practice of mixing oil with the ashes of the previous year’s palm branches used on Palm Sunday, to be applied in the shape of a cross to the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. Ash Wednesday worship service includes music, pastoral homily and Holy Communion by intinction.
Ash Wednesday is a moveable feast, occurring as early as February 4 or as late as March 10 because it is dependent upon the date of Easter, also a moveable feast, that falls between March 22 and April 25. Ash Wednesday marks the official start of Lent, a season of prayer, penance, and fasting—typically of a particiular food or activity—as a reminder of Jesus' sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

The Bible calls us to be good stewards of God’s abundant gifts and, in obedience, Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church strives to be a good steward of church assets. Likewise, as individuals within the church, we owe to God our similar custodial commitment to personal and family assets. Estate planning is an essential part of godly stewardship that also helps provide some peace of mind, especially during challenging economic times.
Our church endowment fund committee has turned to some local experts to introduce the congregation to estate planning rationale and techniques in a series of seminars, beginning Saturday, February 20.
Launch Your Legacy Leaders and Topics
Presented by Coronado legal specialists and church members C. David Herring and June Mac Leod, the first seminar will demystify estate planning for those who are new to the topic. And, for those who have a plan in place, this seminar will reveal taxation changes that might warrant a new look at existing documents. This seminar won’t explain how to draft a will or where to send estate money. Instead, the speakers will explore the questions that we all need to ask before preparing documents that provide instruction for the future. The seminar also will assist in resolving some of the challenges we may face when we lose a loved one.
Launch Your Legacy seminar leaders will address the following important questions:
• What would happen if I were to die without a will or trust?
• Who would care for my children if I were to die unexpectedly?
• What would happen if my aging parents are relying upon me for assistance?
• What kind of life would I face if I were to become incapacitated?
• What are the most efficient techniques to pass on assets to my beneficiaries?
• How can I convert non-earning assets to income during my retirement years?
• What type of care will I have near the end of my life?

The Entire Month of February
A perfect storm of troubled economy, Christmastide overload, and recent inclement San Diego weather has leveled Presbyterian Urban Ministries supplies of essential hygiene products and men's shoes. The ministry is between official drives and could use our help to tide their resources. Throughout the month of February, our Board of Deacons is coordinating a drive to raise the following desperately needed items:
- men's shoes
- travel-size deodorant
- travel-size shampoo
Donors may drop off supplies at the church office at Kirk House during normal business hours or at the church narthex before or after worship services on Sundays.
